A Chinese national living in California has been arrested for allegedly working as an unregistered agent for Beijing. Federal officials apprehended Yaoning “Mike” Sun, 64, in Chino Hills, accusing him of collaborating with Chinese government operatives.
Sun reportedly worked with John Chen, a 71-year-old Chinese national who was recently sentenced to 20 months in prison. Chen was convicted of operating as an unregistered agent for the PRC and attempting to bribe a U.S. official.
Prosecutors allege that Sun and Chen worked to influence American politics by supporting candidates viewed as favorable to China’s foreign policy goals. The pair reportedly focused on officials who would align with Beijing’s stance on Taiwan.
The DOJ complaint names Sun as the campaign manager for a Southern California city council candidate elected in 2022. Referred to as “Individual 1,” the candidate’s campaign allegedly provided a channel for Sun to supply information to Chen, who then shared it with Chinese officials.
Chen’s alleged activities extended beyond election meddling. Court documents describe his efforts to organize events promoting pro-China narratives, including participation in Independence Day parades and other high-profile gatherings.
Sun also served as campaign treasurer for Eileen Wang, a member of the Arcadia City Council. Both Sun and Wang are reportedly affiliated with U.S. News Center, a California-based media outlet. Wang has not commented on her connection to Sun.
