Chinese Cyber Threats Target US Politics, FBI Investigates

The FBI has announced new findings in its probe into Chinese cyber-espionage efforts, revealing a “broad and significant” campaign targeting Americans in government and political roles. The agency is urging vigilance as it works to combat these threats.

In September, the FBI exposed a Chinese hacking operation that infected over 200,000 U.S. devices with malicious software. Last month, hackers linked to Beijing reportedly attempted to breach the phones of President-elect Donald Trump, Vice President-elect JD Vance, and Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign team.

The FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) also discovered that hackers requested call records from telecommunications providers to gather information on specific individuals. The primary goal, officials say, is to steal critical technological and government data.

Although the FBI has not disclosed specific names of victims, it stated that most targets were involved in high-level political and governmental work. The agencies are working to assist affected entities and bolster cybersecurity defenses within vulnerable sectors.

Chinese officials have denied any connection to the espionage, labeling the allegations as unfounded. U.S. authorities, however, remain firm in their stance, pointing to clear evidence of state-sponsored cyberattacks.

The FBI encourages organizations to report suspicious activities and seek assistance from local field offices or CISA to address potential vulnerabilities and protect critical systems.
