Congress To Certify Donald Trump’s Electoral Win Later Today

Congress will meet later today to certify the 2024 Electoral College results, officially confirming the once and future president, Donald Trump, as the 47th president of the United States. This moment comes four years after Trump “lost” the 2020 election under contentious circumstances.

Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris was secured with 312 Electoral College votes to her 226. Harris, fulfilling her constitutional duty as president of the Senate, will preside over the session despite her defeat.

The certification involves the reading of state-certified electoral results in alphabetical order by tellers representing both chambers of Congress. Federal law allows objections to the results, but such challenges require written support from one-fifth of members in both the House and Senate. No objections meeting this threshold are expected during today’s session.

This certification contrasts sharply with January 6, 2021, when Mike Pence certified Joe Biden’s victory amid allegations of election fraud and widespread questions about the integrity of the process. Trump’s supporters have long viewed that moment as a turning point in modern political history.

Republicans now hold majorities in both the House and Senate, giving Trump a strong foundation to pursue his policy agenda during his second term. Today’s proceedings will mark the official culmination of his remarkable political comeback.

As the nation waits for the certification to conclude, preparations are already underway for Trump’s January 20 inauguration ceremony.
