Democrats have made a noticeable shift in their stance on the U.S.-Mexico border over the past three years, driven by the challenges of handling migrants being sent to cities under their control. CNN’s Priscilla Alvarez reported that the recent busloads of migrants arriving in Democratic-led cities have pushed many Democrats to voice concerns about the border crisis, leading to a political shift within the party.
Initially, when President Joe Biden took office, the Democratic Party was not as vocal about border security. However, as crises at the southern border intensified and affected cities run by Democratic mayors, attitudes began to change. Now, Vice President Kamala Harris is taking a tougher stance on border control, likely influenced by polling data that shows President Donald Trump with an edge when it comes to voter trust on immigration issues.
During a CNN broadcast, host Jake Tapper asked Alvarez about Harris’ shift on immigration since 2019. In response, Alvarez noted that Harris has tended to focus on the current administration’s efforts to manage the border. Alvarez emphasized that the Democratic Party today is very different from where it stood when Biden first took office.
As migrants continue to be sent to cities like New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.,
Democrats find themselves under increasing pressure to address the issue. Their shift towards stronger border enforcement may be a reflection of the direct impact these policies are having on their constituents, who are facing the real consequences of the ongoing immigration crisis.
