Denmark Moves Forward With Military Expansion Amid Growing Concerns

Denmark is taking steps to reinforce its military as European tensions escalate. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that the security situation is worsening, prompting the government to prepare a significant increase in defense spending.

Frederiksen told lawmakers that immediate action is necessary, stating that Denmark must strengthen its military to safeguard national security. She said the current situation in Europe is more severe than during the Cold War.

According to Danish public broadcaster DR, the government is expected to introduce a 50-billion-kroner ($7 billion) defense fund for 2025-2026. While officials initially considered doubling this amount, a shortage of available military equipment led to a lower figure.

One key area of investment is air defense technology, which Denmark currently lacks. The government has identified this as a critical need and is looking to secure necessary systems as quickly as possible.

If the spending increase is implemented, Denmark’s defense budget will rise to 3% of GDP, exceeding NATO’s current 2% target. Former President Donald Trump has pushed for NATO countries to raise defense contributions to 5%, while the US currently spends about 3.4% of GDP on defense.

Denmark has played a key role in supporting Ukraine, with the Danish foreign ministry reporting that the country has provided $7.52 billion in military aid and $741 million in civilian assistance since 2022.
