DeSantis Sends State Troops To Ports As Strikes Threaten Hurricane Recovery Efforts

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has deployed state troops to keep the state’s ports operational as dock worker strikes threaten to disrupt the flow of goods. With much of the southeastern U.S. still reeling from Hurricane Helene, DeSantis said it is crucial to ensure supplies continue to reach those affected by the storm.

The deployment of the Florida National Guard and Florida State Guard to impacted ports is part of the governor’s plan to maintain order and ensure that operations resume. “We can’t afford to let these strikes slow down the relief efforts,” DeSantis said during a Thursday press conference.

Hurricane Helene left a devastating toll, with more than 200 lives lost and entire communities in need of basic necessities. DeSantis emphasized that any disruption at Florida’s ports could have serious consequences for those still recovering. “These strikes would be problematic under normal circumstances, but during a disaster, they are simply unacceptable,” he said.

DeSantis also took aim at the Biden-Harris administration, calling on them to take more action to ensure that goods continue to flow to the areas hardest hit by the hurricane. “It’s the administration’s responsibility to make sure that storm victims get the help they need,” DeSantis said, stressing the importance of keeping supply chains intact.

The governor announced additional measures, including suspending tolls and weight restrictions for trucks delivering supplies. The Florida Highway Patrol will also be involved in managing traffic and ensuring that goods are transported efficiently from ports to where they are needed most.

DeSantis reaffirmed Florida’s commitment to recovery, saying, “Florida is leading the way in ensuring that our communities rebuild and recover.”
