Georgia Republicans Push Supreme Court To Reinstate Election Rules After Court Defeat

Georgia Republicans and the RNC are appealing to the state’s Supreme Court to reverse a recent court ruling that blocked new election integrity rules. These rules, which were passed by the Georgia State Election Board, were intended to strengthen transparency and accountability in the state’s election process.

Judge Thomas Cox struck down the rules, arguing that the Election Board exceeded its authority by passing measures such as hand-counting paper ballots and expanding poll watcher access. Cox stated that these changes should have been made by the Georgia General Assembly.

RNC Chairman Michael Whatley criticized the ruling, calling it a setback for election security. He emphasized the importance of reinstating the rules to ensure transparency in the upcoming election. “The judge sided with Democrats who want to undermine election integrity,” Whatley said, adding that the RNC will continue to fight for these rules.

Republicans filed an emergency petition with the Georgia Supreme Court, requesting that the rules be reinstated while the appeal is considered. The court’s decision is expected soon, with the 2024 election just weeks away.

These rules have sparked debate over how elections are managed in Georgia, a state that has been at the center of election controversies since the 2020 presidential race.
