GOP Candidate Griffin Secures Court Order Halting Election Certification

Jefferson Griffin, a Republican candidate for North Carolina’s Supreme Court, has secured a temporary stay blocking the certification of Democrat Allison Riggs’ victory in the race. The state Supreme Court issued the order as Griffin continues to challenge the validity of thousands of ballots.

The election was tight, with Riggs narrowly ahead by 734 votes after a recount. Griffin’s campaign disputes the inclusion of 60,000 ballots, which they argue could swing the outcome of the race. Griffin, joined by state and national GOP leaders, has filed multiple challenges to these votes.

“This fight is about ensuring the integrity of our democratic process,” Griffin said. RNC Chairman Michael Whatley supported the challenge, accusing the State Board of Elections of failing to conduct a fair and transparent election.

The case has moved between state and federal courts. While a federal judge sent it back to North Carolina, the elections board appealed to the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, which has yet to issue a decision. The state Supreme Court’s ruling temporarily halts certification while the challenges are reviewed.

Riggs recused herself from the case, and Justice Anita Earls dissented from the majority decision. Earls argued that delaying certification undermines the state’s electoral framework.

The election dispute has reignited debates over voter integrity in North Carolina, where Republicans have questioned the validity of several races after Democrats secured unexpected victories down-ballot.
