Tom Homan, incoming border czar for President-elect Donald Trump, reiterated Friday that the administration will move forward with its plans to deport illegal immigrants, despite resistance from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
The ACLU filed a lawsuit in November to obtain information about Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) strategy for implementing Trump’s mass deportation pledge. Homan addressed the lawsuit on Fox News, stating, “We’re going to do this. They’re not going to stop us.”
Homan called out sanctuary cities for refusing to cooperate with ICE, arguing that such policies put communities at risk. “We can apprehend individuals safely in jails, but when they’re released into the community, it creates unnecessary dangers,” he said.
Trump’s choice of South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem to lead the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was another topic of discussion. Homan expressed confidence in her ability to help enforce immigration laws, calling her nomination a “great step forward.”
The ACLU has outlined plans to use legal challenges, lobbying and coordination with Democratic leaders to oppose Trump’s immigration policies. Mayors in cities like Chicago, Tucson and Denver have vowed not to cooperate with ICE on mass deportations.
Despite this opposition, Homan emphasized the administration’s commitment to public safety, saying, “We are determined to follow through on these policies because it’s the right thing to do for our communities.”
