The House Oversight Committee, chaired by Rep. James Comer (R-KY), has subpoenaed Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, seeking documents related to Gov. Tim Walz’s (D-MN) alleged ties to China. Comer’s investigation has focused on reports that Walz, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, has visited China over 30 times.
A whistleblower has informed the committee of a DHS group chat containing information about Walz’s interactions with China, raising concerns among Republicans about possible CCP influence. Comer also highlighted Walz’s involvement with the Hormel Institute, which has partnered with Chinese research organizations.
Comer has dismissed accusations that the investigation is politically motivated, emphasizing that the inquiry into Walz’s ties began before his nomination as Kamala Harris’ running mate. He pointed to the need for transparency on any connections between US politicians and foreign governments.
Walz’s frequent travels to China, including organizing a student trip in 1993, have led Republicans to question his foreign policy stance, particularly on China. Comer’s request for unredacted documents from Mayorkas is aimed at shedding light on any potential involvement between Walz and the CCP.
The committee has scheduled Mayorkas to testify on October 7, where he will be required to produce the requested intelligence reports and communications. This investigation has become a focal point as Republicans scrutinize Walz’s past actions with China.
