White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is facing backlash for downplaying President-elect Donald Trump’s involvement in securing a ceasefire and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly thanked both President Joe Biden and Trump, yet the Biden administration has refused to recognize Trump’s role.
At a press briefing, Fox News reporter Jacqui Heinrich directly asked Jean-Pierre why Biden would not acknowledge Trump’s contribution. Jean-Pierre claimed that the agreement resulted from months of diplomatic work led by Biden, dismissing the idea that Trump’s pressure played a part in the negotiations.
Contradicting the White House’s narrative, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller admitted that Trump and his transition team were “critical” in achieving the deal. Miller highlighted that the Biden administration coordinated with Trump’s team to finalize the ceasefire, a fact the White House has avoided acknowledging.
Biden himself brushed off Trump’s involvement, sarcastically asking a reporter, “Is that a joke?” when questioned about giving Trump any credit. Netanyahu, however, thanked Trump for helping to advance the release of hostages and bring relief to their families.
On Truth Social, Trump celebrated the agreement, crediting his election win for pressuring Hamas into reaching a deal. He promised to continue supporting Israel and ensuring that Gaza does not become a breeding ground for terrorism.
Biden’s refusal to share credit has sparked criticism that the administration is more concerned with protecting Biden’s political image than recognizing bipartisan efforts. This move has raised concerns about the administration’s priorities as it seeks to secure a lasting legacy.
