Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) issued a warning Friday to states seeking to block former President Donald Trump from the 2024 ballot that Congress will have the final say over whether or not to certify electors from those states in 2025.
The Kentucky delegate to Washington D.C. said the likelihood of the U.S. House of Representatives tossing out any state’s electoral votes in 2025 would depend on whether Republicans keep their slim majority in the House. While the GOP does control the House at the moment, there is only a difference of eight seats between Republicans and Democrats.
“Maine, Colorado, and other states that might try to bureaucratically deny ballot access to any Republican nominee should remember the U.S. House of Representatives is the ultimate arbiter of whether to certify electors from those states,” Rep. Massie wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter. Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk replied, “Interesting.”

The certification of electors is usually a run-of-the-mill procedure. Next year however, it could be a viable way for Republicans to redress election interference in states like Maine and Colorado. In the ensuing reply thread, a commenter asked Massie, “Isn’t this what J6ers were protesting for? Not an ‘insurrection’ but for a review before certification?”
“There are several key differences, but here’s one difference: That effort was doomed because Democrats controlled the House and Senate at that time. Republicans hold a slim majority in the House now. Whether we keep the majority remains to be seen,” Massie answered.

Massie has endorsed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) for president in the Republican primary this cycle. But Trump has supported the Kentucky Republican in the past. Although Trump once said Massie ought to be thrown out of the Republican Party after he opposed the president’s $2 trillion coronavirus relief bill, Trump endorsed him in the 2022 GOP primary.
“Congressman Thomas Massie is a Conservative Warrior for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District!” Trump wrote in his statement. “An MIT graduate and a first-rate Defender of the Constitution, Thomas fights hard to Protect your Liberties, especially the First and Second Amendments, which are under siege by the Radical Left.”
