Men Arrested For Attempting To Launch Meth, Tobacco Into Federal Prison

Two men were taken into custody in Louisiana after attempting to use an air-powered cannon to fire drugs and tobacco over the fence of a federal prison.

Jose Francisco Herrera Munoz, 18, and Angel Gonzales Gutierrez, 19, were caught near the Federal Correctional Complex in Pollock before they could launch their contraband. Deputies from the Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office seized $112,000 in tobacco and $89,500 in methamphetamine from the suspects.

The men had planned to use a compressed-air cannon, a device typically seen at sporting events to launch T-shirts into crowds. The cannon found in their possession had the power to send objects more than 350 feet, making it capable of clearing the prison’s high-security perimeter.

Authorities had been investigating the smuggling operation before intercepting the suspects. Deputies seized the air cannon along with the illegal goods and placed both men under arrest.

Munoz and Gutierrez face charges of attempting to introduce contraband into a penal institution and attempting to distribute methamphetamine. Munoz is also being held under an ICE detainer due to his illegal immigration status.

FCI Pollock, a high-security prison housing 870 inmates, recently suspended all visitations indefinitely following the incident.
