NYC Councilman Justin Brannan Booted From Italian Caucus Over Columbus Day Dispute

Councilman Justin Brannan (D-Brooklyn) has been removed from the New York City Council’s Italian Caucus due to his views on Columbus Day. Brannan, a candidate in next year’s comptroller race, has been outspoken about his willingness to consider renaming the holiday to Italian-American Heritage Day, which did not sit well with the caucus.

The Italian Caucus, led by Councilman David Carr (R-Staten Island), updated its bylaws after Brannan’s initial comments in 2023, ensuring that all members oppose any attempt to rename Columbus Day. Carr explained, “We wanted to make sure there was no room for negotiation on keeping the holiday intact.”

Brannan, who is of Italian descent, defended his position, stating that while he respects his heritage, he believes the holiday should reflect the broader contributions of Italian-Americans. He also criticized the caucus for imposing what he called a “MAGA litmus test.”

The disagreement escalated when Brannan was excluded from this year’s Italian Heritage Celebration hosted by the City Council. Fellow caucus member Councilman Robert Holden (D-Queens) supported the decision, accusing Brannan of diluting Italian culture in favor of “trendy” political ideas.

Despite Brannan’s removal, the Italian Caucus remains dedicated to defending Columbus Day as a national holiday, viewing it as an important part of Italian-American history and pride.
