Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the war in Ukraine could have been prevented if President Donald Trump had remained in office after the 2020 election. Speaking to Russian state media, Putin argued that the situation that unfolded in 2022 would not have occurred under Trump’s leadership.
“I cannot but agree with him that if he had been president, if his victory had not been stolen from him in 2020, then perhaps there would not have been the crisis in Ukraine,” Putin said.

Putin’s remarks come as his government continues to criticize Western countries for their military support of Ukraine. Russia’s Foreign Ministry recently condemned what it called the “illegitimate Kyiv regime” and accused the West of obstructing peace efforts by continuing to send arms.
Vladimir Putin said, there would be no war happening right now between Russia and Ukraine, if President Trump would’ve won in 2020.

President Donald Trump, now back in the White House, has maintained that he could have prevented the conflict from escalating had he been in office. In a recent post on Truth Social, he warned that without a resolution, Russia would face significant economic consequences through tariffs and sanctions imposed by the US.

“If we don’t make a ‘deal,’ and soon, I have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States,” Trump wrote.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office responded cautiously, stating that any potential peace talks between Trump and Putin must involve European representatives. Ukraine has insisted that negotiations cannot happen without key allies being involved in the process.

Trump has previously suggested that Zelensky made strategic mistakes that contributed to the war, stating that he “shouldn’t have allowed this war to happen.” Trump’s team has also indicated that military aid to Ukraine could be reevaluated if Kyiv resists negotiations.
Prior efforts to negotiate a settlement were reportedly blocked by the Biden administration and its allies, according to Russian officials.
