Despite the arrest, concerns about safety persist among residents in the neighborhood, reflecting a broader unease about rising crime rates. Christina Torres, a neighbor of the victim, articulated the pervasive fear gripping the community.
Meanwhile, Beverly Parks, the mother of the suspect, has come forward, acknowledging her role in persuading her son to surrender to authorities. Beverly recounted her efforts to hold her son accountable for his actions, citing his recent struggles with drug addiction and grief as contributing factors.
“I’m his mother that turned him in. I’m the one that facilitated him being arrested,” Beverly Parks, 56, told The New York Post.
“I found out about this yesterday morning at 5:12 am, and I’ve been trying to get my son to do the right thing ever since. And I did,” she said on Saturday.
“I had my son go be accountable for his actions, no matter that he was drunk, that he was on drugs, that he was grieving,” she continued, adding: “He did something wrong and he has to deal with it. Period.”
She told the outlet that her son, who has a history of prior arrests, had previously returned to New York from North Carolina with his family. His mother also expressed remorse for the victim and hoped for forgiveness, acknowledging the gravity of her son’s actions and the lasting impact on the victim’s life.
