Taiwan’s defense ministry is on high alert due to a series of missile tests conducted by China’s Rocket Force in Inner Mongolia. The tests, detected early Saturday morning, have prompted Taiwan’s air defense forces to stay vigilant. Taiwan closely monitors Chinese military activities, especially given Beijing’s regular maneuvers around the island, which China views as its own territory. The ministry did not provide specific details about the tests.
The Rocket Force, responsible for China’s conventional and nuclear missiles, conducted these tests approximately 1,200 miles from Taiwan. Taiwan has sophisticated radar systems capable of monitoring activities deep within China. This heightened alert comes amidst increasing Chinese military pressure on Taiwan since President Lai Ching-te took office in May. Lai, who Beijing labels a “separatist,” has repeatedly offered to engage in talks with China, but these offers have been consistently rebuffed.
China’s defense ministry did not respond to requests for comment. The missile tests add to the ongoing tension between Taiwan and China, which has escalated since Lai’s inauguration. In August 2022, China conducted similar missile launches into waters around Taiwan during military exercises, expressing its discontent over a visit to Taipei by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Taiwan operates advanced radar stations on its central mountain range, which provide extensive surveillance capabilities. Despite the tensions, Lai maintains that Taiwan’s future should be determined by its people, rejecting Beijing’s claims of sovereignty over the island. The recent missile tests underscore the fragile and volatile nature of cross-strait relations, with both sides remaining on high alert amidst these developments.
As the situation evolves, Taiwan continues to monitor Chinese military actions closely, emphasizing the need for preparedness and vigilance in the face of ongoing threats from across the strait.
