Tensions Rise In Greenland As Usha Vance Heads To Traditional Race

As Greenland prepares for local elections, the island is also bracing for a visit from Usha Vance, who plans to attend the annual dogsled competition in Sisimiut. Her trip is expected to begin midweek ahead of the March 29 race and comes amid growing concerns about U.S. influence on the Arctic island.

While the visit is considered private, reports suggest that National Security Adviser Mike Waltz may be joining her. The pair may also stop by the American military base in the north after visiting Nuuk.

The mayor of Sisimiut confirmed he was contacted for a meeting with the U.S. guests but declined, citing his campaign obligations. He said the timing of the visit made it difficult to hold official discussions.

Greenland is set to hold local elections on April 1, just days after the race. One member of the Danish Parliament representing Greenland has accused the Trump administration of undermining the island’s autonomy by sending prominent Americans during a politically sensitive time.

This follows remarks by President Trump, who stated that acquiring Greenland is a goal for the U.S. He said the move would serve international security interests, pointing to threats from China and Russia in Arctic waters.

Usha Vance’s visit comes shortly after Donald Trump Jr. toured Greenland with Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. That trip also drew criticism, though it was conducted under the same private classification.

Roughly 800 people rallied in Greenland’s capital of Nuuk to protest the Trump administration’s statements and what they view as increasing interference. Demonstrators carried signs opposing foreign influence and urging respect for Greenland’s decision-making.
