Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faced heavy criticism after his meeting with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago. Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre called the visit “a position of weakness,” accusing Trudeau of failing to secure meaningful outcomes for Canada.
The meeting came after Trump announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports unless Canada addresses illegal immigration and drug trafficking. While Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum quickly held a call with Trump to ease tensions, Trudeau delayed his response and returned from Florida without guarantees the tariffs would be lifted.
Poilievre expressed frustration with Trudeau’s handling of the crisis, stating, “Normally, when a prime minister meets a president, they’re looking to make gains. Trudeau went in just trying to limit losses.” He criticized Trudeau for “losing control” of Canada’s borders, economy, and ability to negotiate.
Trump described the meeting as “very productive,” highlighting discussions on trade deficits, fentanyl trafficking, and illegal immigration. Trudeau, however, provided few specifics, leading to concerns from provincial leaders about Ottawa’s effectiveness.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said Trudeau’s policies weaken Canada’s ability to advocate for energy security. “We are the solution to America’s energy needs, but Trudeau’s production caps and taxes undermine that message,” she said. Ontario Premier Doug Ford launched a campaign promoting the province as an independent trading partner.
Critics argue Trudeau’s visit reflects his broader failures in leadership. Poilievre concluded, “This is the consequence of a weak prime minister who has lost control. Canadians are paying the price.”
