President Donald Trump’s plan to dismantle the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is gaining momentum, with his administration pushing for a complete overhaul of how taxes are collected in the US. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick recently detailed the proposal, which aims to shift tax obligations away from American workers and onto foreign corporations profiting from US markets.

Trump’s plan includes replacing the IRS with an External Revenue Service that would oversee tariffs, trade duties, and foreign-based revenue streams. The administration argues that industries such as cruise lines and shipping companies have avoided paying their share by registering under foreign flags, a loophole Trump wants to eliminate.

Foreign alcohol imports have also been identified as a major area of concern. According to Lutnick, imported liquor and spirits often enter the US without paying the same tax rates as domestically produced beverages. Under Trump’s proposed system, these foreign companies would no longer receive preferential treatment.

Trump has already imposed tariffs on key imports from China, Mexico, and Canada. His administration insists that these taxes on foreign trade will help reduce or eliminate the need for Americans to fund the government through income taxes. More tariffs targeting auto manufacturers and technology firms are expected to follow.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is leading an internal review of the IRS. A DOGE official was recently sent to IRS headquarters to assess the agency’s financial operations and long-term viability, signaling that structural changes may soon be underway.

The IRS has long been a point of contention for conservatives, who have criticized its bureaucracy and enforcement practices. With Trump leading the charge to dismantle the agency, his administration is making a direct push to restructure federal taxation.
