Trump Administration Targets Department Of Education For Major Overhaul

President Donald Trump is expected to take executive action aimed at restructuring the Department of Education, following through on a long-promised plan to reduce federal control over the nation’s schools. The executive order is set to direct the department to begin cutting its size and transferring non-essential functions elsewhere.

Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been actively involved in the process, with its staff reportedly reviewing the agency’s internal operations. The group has been tasked with identifying areas for budget cuts, and sources indicate that significant reductions are being considered.

House Education Committee Chairman Tim Walberg of Michigan has acknowledged that fully eliminating the department would be difficult due to congressional opposition. However, he has suggested that Republicans may focus on limiting the department’s authority rather than abolishing it outright.

The executive order is expected to reassign certain responsibilities to state governments and other federal agencies. While some aspects of the department’s work are required by law, others could be phased out without congressional approval.

Administration officials have suggested that the timing of the order may depend on the confirmation of Education Secretary nominee Linda McMahon. No confirmation hearing has been scheduled yet, but the administration is expected to move forward with its plans regardless.

The push to restructure the Department of Education is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to streamline government operations. The move follows similar actions aimed at cutting bureaucracy and reducing spending across multiple federal agencies.
