Trump Orders Musk To Investigate Federal Spending At Education And Defense Departments

Elon Musk’s efforts to overhaul federal spending will now extend to the Department of Education and the Pentagon after President Donald Trump directed his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team to investigate both agencies.

During a White House press conference alongside Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Trump stated that Musk’s team has already uncovered major waste and that more agencies will soon be under review. “Pentagon, Education, just about everything—we’re going to go through it all,” Trump said.

The Education Department has been a frequent target for spending cuts, with Trump previously suggesting that it should be eliminated. His administration is reportedly exploring ways to significantly downsize or dismantle the agency. Reports indicate that Musk’s team has already gained access to federal education databases, including student loan systems.

Trump said the military will also be examined for wasteful spending. “We’re going to find a lot,” he said. The Pentagon’s budget for fiscal year 2025 has grown to over $900 billion, despite the department failing multiple audits. Past investigations have found overpayments and unnecessary expenditures, including inflated prices for basic supplies.

Musk’s cost-cutting measures have already disrupted federal agencies. His team recently attempted to dismantle USAID, placing all of its employees on leave. The move sparked protests and legal battles, with opponents arguing that such actions require congressional approval.

Despite criticism, Trump remains firm in his support of Musk’s efforts. “Elon is doing a great job. He’s uncovering fraud, corruption, and waste,” Trump said, adding that DOGE will continue identifying areas for cuts across multiple agencies.
