Trump Should Tackle Bureaucratic Resistance With Targeted Reforms

New polling reveals that a significant number of federal government employees are prepared to resist President-elect Donald Trump’s policies. This finding suggests that Trump should consider targeted reforms to ensure his administration can implement its agenda without internal obstruction.

According to RMG Research, 42% of federal employees plan to oppose Trump’s incoming administration. Among Democrats in the federal workforce, that figure rises to 73%. In contrast, 89% of Republican federal workers support Trump’s policy plans, revealing a stark partisan divide in the government.

One reform Trump could explore is reinstating the Schedule F employment classification. This policy would allow for the reassignment or removal of federal employees who actively obstruct executive directives. Implementing this tool could help ensure that government agencies function efficiently and remain accountable to elected leadership.

There is also a clear disconnect between federal workers and the general public. RMG Research found that 59% of Main Street Americans support Trump’s agenda, while only 28% favor bureaucratic resistance. Meanwhile, the political elite are more inclined to support obstruction within the federal government.

Federal employees are entrusted with carrying out policies chosen by elected officials, not advancing personal political preferences. Reforms that reinforce accountability could help realign the federal workforce with the interests of American voters.

If Trump focuses on addressing bureaucratic resistance early in his administration, it may lead to a more responsive and effective government. Tools like Schedule F could be a practical solution to prevent internal opposition from derailing key policy initiatives.
