Biden Commends Secret Service Director Amid Controversy Over Trump’s Near-Fatal Attack

President Joe Biden expressed gratitude for Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle in a statement on Tuesday, despite the controversy surrounding her role in the near-fatal shooting of former President Donald Trump. Cheatle announced her resignation following a critical House Oversight Committee hearing that scrutinized her leadership.

Biden’s letter praised Cheatle’s dedication. “Kimberly Cheatle has selflessly dedicated and risked her life to protect our nation throughout her career in the United States Secret Service,” he wrote. “We especially thank her for answering the call to lead the Secret Service during our Administration and we are grateful for her service to our family.”

Cheatle’s resignation comes after a 20-year-old gunman climbed onto a roof during a Pennsylvania rally and fired multiple shots. Trump was hit in the ear after turning his head slightly, avoiding a more serious injury. Tragically, Corey Comperatore, 50, was killed while shielding his family from the gunfire, and two other attendees were severely injured.

During Monday’s hearing, Cheatle acknowledged the agency’s failure and announced an internal investigation into the assassination attempt. However, she provided limited information and withheld requested documents, according to Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC).

Additionally, Cheatle mentioned that no radio recordings from the day of the attack were available.

Fox News reported that the gunman had hidden the firearm before the shooting spree. “It was not immediately clear where he hid it,” Fox News noted. “By the time agents spotted him on the roof, he was already holding it.”

Cheatle admitted that no counter-snipers were positioned on the roof due to its slope, citing safety concerns. Despite identifying the shooter as a potential threat, Trump was still allowed to take the stage. Video footage from the rally shows attendees alerting authorities to the shooter minutes before the attack.

Biden’s statement also mentioned plans to appoint a new Secret Service Director soon. While the investigation into the incident continues, the resignation of Cheatle marks a significant step in addressing the security lapses that led to the near-tragedy.
