Sen. Elizabeth Warren announced on CNN’s “State of the Union” that if Kamala Harris is elected president, she will work with Congress to grant citizenship to millions of illegal immigrants currently residing in the United States. This plan comes after millions entered the country during President Joe Biden’s term, following his reversal of Donald Trump’s executive orders which required asylum seekers to wait in Mexico.
“I believe we need to create a pathway to citizenship,” Warren stated. “Kamala Harris will work with Congress and get that done.”
Since Biden took office in 2020, over 10 million illegal immigrants have entered the U.S. Harris was tasked with addressing the border crisis in March 2021, earning her the title of “border czar.” Despite this responsibility, she and her aides have distanced themselves from the role.
Jake Tapper, host of “State of the Union,” questioned Warren about the administration’s controversial immigration policies, pointing out widespread disapproval among Americans.
“I don’t need to tell you voters overwhelmingly disapprove of how the Biden-Harris administration has handled the border,” Tapper said. “By giving the nomination to one of the leaders of the border effort, aren’t Democrats doubling down on one of your party’s biggest vulnerabilities?”
Warren defended Harris, noting that border crossings are now lower than in the last year of Trump’s administration. She emphasized that solving the immigration problem requires congressional action. “We need the tools in order to have more resources at the border, to have more resources in the states and cities that are supporting migrants. And I believe we need to create a pathway to citizenship. All of that is part of what we need to do for comprehensive immigration reform. Kamala Harris will work with Congress and get that done,” Warren continued.
The Trump campaign has been critical of the Biden-Harris administration’s open-border policies. At a recent rally in Minnesota, Republican VP nominee JD Vance criticized Harris’s stance on immigration, stating, “She wants to hand over control of our country to people who shouldn’t be here in the first place. And we cannot let her.”
Vance added, “I have a message, a very simple message to the millions of illegal aliens who are in this country and shouldn’t be: If you are here, start packing your bags right now because Donald J. Trump is coming back into office.”
