Magnet Fishers In Legal Battle Over Squatting Allegations

Barbie Agostini and James Kane, who gained fame after finding a $100,000 safe while magnet fishing, are now embroiled in a legal dispute with Barbie’s sister, Kathleen Agostini. Kathleen claims the couple has been squatting in her Queens apartment, owing over $15,000 in back rent. The couple’s lease expired in October, yet they have refused to vacate the property.

The couple’s viral fame began when they pulled a safe filled with money from a lake in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Despite this windfall, they have allegedly neglected their rent payments. Kathleen began eviction proceedings in January and expressed frustration over their refusal to leave. She fears their newfound celebrity status might mask their behavior.

In addition to the rent dispute, Kathleen accuses the couple of causing significant property damage. She claims that the corrosive chemicals Kane used to clean their magnet fishing finds have damaged the plumbing, leading to a ceiling collapse above her bedroom. The couple disputes these allegations, stating that the damage was not their fault and accusing Kathleen of harassment and doxxing them online.

John Francis, the couple’s attorney, stated that the court ordered Kathleen to assess and fix the property. He also mentioned that Kathleen rejected rental payments from the couple, adding to the property’s disrepair. Kathleen, however, claims financial hardship prevents her from making the necessary repairs.

The court has allowed the couple to remain in the unit until the legal dispute is settled. Kathleen fears they will not pay or leave until a judge intervenes.
