A poll by J.L. Partners and the Daily Mail found that Trump led Biden 46-43%, respectively. The survey also shows the former president leading Obama by three percentage points.
The co-founder of J.L. Partners, James Johnson, pointed out that U.S. voters are not more interested in voting for the former first lady or Biden over Trump.
“Some have been touting an emergency parachute for Biden for some time: draft Michelle Obama,” Johnson said.
“But it turns out voters are no more keen to vote for Michelle over Trump than they are for Biden, with Trump beating her overall and even with Independents,” he added. “It was never very realistic, but this poll puts paid to the idea she can be any kind of saving force for the Democrats.”
The idea of choosing Obama to replace Biden has been touted by Democrats in recent weeks, given concerns over the president’s abysmal approval rating and unpopularity with the American people as well as his increasing age.
The poll results come as concerns grow over Biden’s weakening cognitive abilities, leading many to speculate that Obama could seek the Democratic presidential nomination in the upcoming November 2024 election. This speculation reached such a magnitude that the former first lady issued a statement in February 2024 denying the rumors.
“As former First Lady Michelle Obama has expressed several times over the years, she will not be running for president,” Obama’s director of communications, Crystal Carson, said. “Mrs. Obama supports President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ re-election campaign.”
In January 2024, Obama admitted that she was worried about the potential outcome of the 2024 presidential election.
“What’s going to happen in this next election? I’m terrified about what could possibly happen, because our leaders matter,” the former first lady said during an episode of the “On Purpose” podcast.
The survey also revealed that Trump leads Biden nationally in a five-way race that includes third-party presidential contenders, with the former president dominating the president 43-39%, respectively.
