Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will receive Secret Service protection following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump over the weekend, as announced by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Monday.
On Saturday, a gunman opened fire at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania, injuring Trump and killing a rally attendee. In response to this violent act, Mayorkas stated that President Joe Biden directed him to ensure Kennedy’s safety by providing Secret Service protection.
Kennedy has sought Secret Service protection multiple times since announcing his presidential bid, but his requests were previously denied. However, the recent attack on Trump has prompted a change in the administration’s stance.
“We are in a heightened and very dynamic threat environment. The United States’ Secret Service, we — including the FBI and our other partners across the federal government — take the threats very seriously and adjust security measures as warranted,” Mayorkas said during a White House press briefing. “Maintaining the safety and security of the president, the former president in their campaign events is one of our most vital priorities. In light of the weekend’s events, the president has directed me to work with the Secret Service to provide protection for Robert Kennedy Jr.”
Mayorkas emphasized that Trump’s safety remains a top priority for the Secret Service, especially as he becomes the nominee at the Republican National Convention in Wisconsin this week. Enhanced security measures will be in place to ensure his protection.
Despite Kennedy’s repeated requests for protection since his campaign launch, the White House had previously deemed it “not warranted.” The recent attack on Trump has amplified calls for Kennedy to receive a protective detail, with many considering the current threat environment as justification.
“In light of what is going on in the world today, I believe that it is imperative that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. receive Secret Service protection — immediately,” Trump posted on Truth Social on Monday, hours before Mayorkas’ announcement.
With the new directive, Kennedy will now have the protection he has long requested, ensuring his safety as he continues his presidential campaign.
