Gaetz Wins Landslide Victory Against McCarthy-Endorsed Primary Opponent

Rep. Matt Gaetz scored a significant win in his primary battle against Aaron Dimmock, who was backed by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Gaetz secured 73% of the vote in Florida’s 1st Congressional District, easily defeating Dimmock by 45 points. The race had attracted national attention due to McCarthy’s involvement and the lingering tension between him and Gaetz following the former Speaker’s ouster in October 2023.

Gaetz celebrated his victory by calling out McCarthy’s failed strategy. “Kevin McCarthy spent $3 million trying to take me down, but it only made us stronger,” Gaetz said, pointing out that his share of the vote increased from 70% in the last primary to 73% this time.

Gaetz suggested that if McCarthy continues his efforts, it could push his support even higher.

The campaign focused heavily on Dimmock’s past work in diversity and inclusion programs, which Gaetz’s team used to portray him as a “RINO” out of step with the district’s America First values. Dimmock’s connections to Black Lives Matter and other progressive causes further damaged his credibility among conservative voters.

The outcome highlights Gaetz’s strength within the MAGA wing of the Republican Party and his ability to fend off challenges from establishment figures like McCarthy. Despite spending millions, McCarthy’s effort to defeat Gaetz ended in a resounding failure, raising questions about the effectiveness of his ongoing “revenge tour” against MAGA Republicans.
